Forex order types and execution: a beginner’s field guide

Know what an order asks for, what it cannot guarantee, and what to check in a demo platform.

Key distinction

An order instruction is not a guaranteed execution price. Platform rules, available liquidity, gaps and volatility can affect the result. Read your provider’s order policy and test controls in a demo account.

Begin with the quote

A currency pair is quoted with a bid and ask. The difference is the spread, one part of the trading cost. If EUR/USD is quoted at 1.0800 / 1.0802, a buy might be offered at the ask and a sell at the bid; that two-pip difference can change. See how EUR/USD is quoted and the cost explainer.

Market, limit and stop orders

InstructionPurposeTrade-off to check
MarketSeek execution at the best available price now.Final fill may differ from the displayed quote.
LimitSet an acceptable price threshold. The order may never fill; broker rules define behavior.
Stop entryTrigger an order when price reaches a level.A trigger does not necessarily guarantee the final fill.
Stop lossPlan an exit if price moves against you.Gaps and fast markets can lead to a different exit price.

Some brokers offer additional order types or guaranteed-stop products with different charges. Check the written policy for your entity and platform.

A simple execution rehearsal

  1. Choose a demo account and record the pair, bid, ask and time.
  2. Enter a small market order, then compare requested and filled prices.
  3. Place a limit order away from the market and observe whether it fills or expires.
  4. Place a stop instruction, then record the trigger and actual fill if it activates.
  5. Calculate spread plus any commission and note whether the position is held overnight.

Repeat around a scheduled event from the economic calendar only in demo mode to observe how quotes can change. Use the demo account checklist and the trading-plan worksheet.

Why execution and leverage belong together

A price move that looks small in pips can be material on a leveraged position. Set the amount you can lose before the order, account for a worse-than-planned fill, and understand your broker’s margin and liquidation terms. The leverage guide and position-size calculator help you organize assumptions; neither predicts a fill.
