What the spread represents

The spread is the difference between the quoted bid and ask. It is one part of opening and closing costs, and may change with market conditions, instrument and account type. A displayed minimum is not necessarily available at every moment.

How commission is charged

Some account types charge a separate commission, often per side or traded volume. To compare fairly, identify whether the quote applies once or to both opening and closing, and which volume definition is used. Check the current account schedule rather than relying on a headline.

Overnight financing and other charges

Positions held beyond a provider’s daily cutoff may incur or receive financing adjustments. Methods, rates, cutoff times and special-day treatment vary. Also check deposit, withdrawal, conversion and inactivity charges. The broker comparison page can help organize your questions.

Compare a realistic scenario

Use the same instrument, position size, account currency and holding period for each provider. A simple estimate is:

Estimated total cost = spread cost + round-turn commission + applicable overnight financing + other relevant charges.

For a rough spread-cost estimate, multiply the spread in pips by the pip value for your position. Confirm whether commission is quoted per side or for the full round turn, and check financing for the direction and number of nights you expect to hold.

Illustrative calculation only

If a hypothetical trade has an estimated $8 spread cost, $6 round-turn commission and $2 financing charge, the estimated total is $16 before any applicable conversion or execution differences. These are example values, not a quote or a typical broker charge.

Record each provider’s current schedule and assumptions in the broker fee worksheet. You can also use the trading calculator guide and revisit the broker comparison checklist. Actual costs may differ from estimates; verify current terms directly with the provider.

Questions traders ask about forex costs

Does the lowest advertised spread mean the cheapest account?

Not necessarily. A separate commission, the spread available when you trade, financing and other account charges can change the total. Compare the same scenario across account types instead of relying on one headline figure.

Is overnight financing always a charge?

No. The amount and direction depend on the provider’s method, instrument, position direction and holding date. Check the current schedule, including special-day adjustments, for the account you would use.
